Certified translations – everything you need to know!

Beglaubigte Übersetzung

When submitting translated documents, have you come across the term ‘certified translation’ but are unsure about exactly what it means? Don’t worry! You can find out below why you are being asked to provide a certified translation and why SemioticTransfer is the perfect partner for you.

Let’s start at the beginning: what is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a legally valid translation of the original document with identical content. The translation is carried out by qualified professional translators before being certified by a notary. This type of document is important when dealing with authorities and government departments, to make sure you don’t have any issues having it recognised.

Below is a selection of documents of which you can obtain a certified translation:

Diplomas Passports, visa certificates
Birth documentation Patents, patent specifications
Marriage certificates Education and training certificates
CVs, job references Contracts, commercial register excerpts
Divorce certificates Residence certificates
Migration papers etc.

How much does a certified translation cost?

There is no set price for a certified translation. The cost will depend on the volume of text, the nature of the document and whether or not an apostille is required. We calculate the price based on the number of words. The minimal price for one page certified by a notary is CHF 180 (excluding VAT at 7.7%). You can use our price calculator to work out the exact cost – it takes only a minute – and place your order straight away.

Apostilles – when certification is not enough

Do you want to take that extra step to make absolutely certain that your certified translation will be recognised? What you need is an apostille, which costs CHF 95 (excluding VAT at 7.7%) from us. It is a sort of additional authentication and is even a requirement for some foreign authorities. The authority responsible for your document will tell you whether or not an apostille is required. It can provide information about exactly which sort of translation you need.
